The first “purposeless” hike of this kind is said to have taken place in the 14th century on Mount Venous (France) by a poet, who thus established a new form of landscape experience.

Today hiking in Austria is the fifth most popular sport after cycling, swimming, running and – of course – skiing. Per the German Hiking Association, the term ” hiking” refers to a duration of at least one hour.

when the shoe presses

The wrong hiking boots can be the experience quite beautiful. On the one hand by blisters and joint pain, on the other hand by increased risk of injury. Because not every shoe is the same, the selection is almost unmanageable. That is why a question is at the forefront: What should the shoe be used for?

The answers range from easy hikes to multi-day trekking tours to climbing tours through snow and ice. Climatic conditions and preferential terrain should also not be neglected.

A rough classification into the following four categories can be derived:

All-round models: These shoes usually have a very soft sole and are most suitable for long walks in the level.

Hiking shoes: The sole is slightly firm, the material usually made of nylon or leather. These shoes are suitable for (shorter) trips of 2-3 days.

Trekking shoes: Often waterproof, with a firm, firm sole, these shoes are well cushioned and also for hiking with heavy luggage the right choice.

Alpine boots: The sole is so stable that it is easy to attach crampons for touring through snow and ice.

The big brands are mostly represented in the shop, but if you want a bigger selection, you will find on-line hiking.

5 tips for the perfect hiking shoe

If you know what the shoes are needed for, please follow these tips:

Try in the afternoon: feet swell throughout the day, so the fitting should be done in the afternoon or evening. This ensures that the shoe will fit throughout the day.

Think big: the shoe fits in the shop optimally? Then prefer to “push” again – because between big toe and shoe should be at least a finger-width distance. After all, the shoes are not only uphill, but also downhill, where the feet push themselves forward when unrolling.

Firm heel: If it slips a little at the heel, then it is almost a blown hair. Slipping in the heel is forbidden!

Artificial course preferred: some shops offer to try the shoe on an artificial course uphill and downhill – so you develop a good feeling for the fit.

The right socks: Fitting socks should preferably be used for the fitting, after all, you are also traveling in the mountains. If you like two pairs of socks on top of each other, this should also take into account the selection.
